Failing to Forgive Debt
The seven-year reset button.
According to Deuteronomy, all debts were to be cancelled every seven years in what was called the 'year of the Lord's release.' This was meant to prevent long-term poverty and reset the economy for the poor. The modern systems of long-term mortgages, student loans, and national debt directly violate this principle. 'At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release... Every creditor shall release what he has lent to his neighbor.' — Deuteronomy 15:1–2 (ESV)
